The Great 30 Minute Debate

The Great 30 Minute Debate

Posted by Madeline | Thursday, February 28, 2008
A few weeks ago, I addressed the Great Garbage Bowl Debate, so when I ran across an article where yet another journalist decided to show us that Rachael's meals can't be made in 30 minutes, I thought it would be appropriate to discuss the Great 30 Minute Debate. The Daily Herald's Laura Bianchi decided to test several of Rachael Ray's recipes from both 30 Minute Meals 2 and Just in Time to see if they could be made in 30 minutes or less.

Let me first say this - why the obsession that Rachael Ray's meals come in under 30 minutes? The way that journalists love to test her meals, you would think that every cookbook came with a money back guarantee if dinner took 31 minutes to make instead of 30.

I would like to start by saying that I think this guy has a little too much free time. My wife and I watch 30 Minute Meals maybe once a week and laugh at the amount of pots and pans this gal generates. Some of her recipes are pretty good but, in my not so humble opinion,NONE of them are ready in 30 minutes. Soups need to simmer and cook down. Meat needs to absorb flavor. What you get in 30 minutes is something that is better than a luke warm Wendy's burger but that's about it.

I'm with ya Captain. Takes me thirty minutes just to get everything out!

The 30-minute claim has never been what bothers me about RR's show. She does tell us that we can do it in 30 minutes though at the beginning of the show, after commercial breaks and in closing each episode. It's just more RR jabber which should never be taken as truth.

I started a meal and played along with Rachael one night just to see if I could do it. Mine took 45 minutes to cook thoroughly. I know I can make a sandwich in less than 10 minutes and she seems to do a lot of those.

Instead of her saying, "I will make a complete meal from start to finish in less than 30 minutes" she should really alter it to say, "I will make a complete meal from start to finish in less than 30 minutes with help of my assistants and terrific editing."

You mean you don't have "swap outs" in your kitchen?
If you redo you kitchen, make sure your kitchen designer gets you a "swap out" so you can put something into your pan, then leave to answer your phone, come back in 4 minutes and the dish is done and ready to serve.
They're pretty expensive but worth the money.
