Princess Gina. They had her smoke so you would "know" the difference between Gina and Hope. They also had "Tony" smoke on time and someone figured out that "Tony" was really Andre because Tony didn't smoke.
That was a few years ago and it's different for soaps, but yes, it is new just this year. They are also considering giving movies where a character smokes an automatic R rating unless it's a period piece (like George Clooney's
Good Night and Good Luck) where the smoking is a plot point, not just gratuitous. Now a days on soaps, the cigars never seem to be lit. (and in case you didn't guess, I'm a Days devotee)
