Overcoming your cooking obstacles

Overcoming your cooking obstacles

Posted Jun 19 2009, 10:21 AM by Karen Datko

This guest post comes from Kris at Cheap Healthy Good.
When it comes to eating healthier and saving money on food, we've established time and time again that few strategies are more effective than cooking at home. Making meals in your own kitchen gives you total control over nutrition, flavor, ingredient quality, and expenditures, among other things. Plus, making a mess with flour is fun.

Still, for many, home cooking is nigh inconceivable. Maybe you work 80 hours a week, and can't find 20 minutes to make a sandwich. Maybe you live in New York's East Village, where your apartment galley doubles as your bathroom and your bedroom. Maybe you never learned to cook, and are afraid of blowing $10 on a chicken, then charring it beyond recognition.

20 minutes to make a sandwich seems like a lot of time, doesn't it?

I know many people do have obstacles in the kitchen and just don't feel comfortable.

I have the other problem...I tend to LIVE in the kitchen! Last night I had a strawberry pie in the oven (which I was making to enter in a contest this morning), tart shells ready to go into the oven and I was sauteeing onions and cutting up pickles for Dill Pickle soup.

In between, I found time to make my puppie's dinner. She is now becoming a vegetarian (doctor's orders) so I'm finding new and different ideas to keep it interesting for her....and me.

This afternoon, I'll make the filling for the tarts, start preparing for dinner, bought halibut and crab meat at the farmer's market this morning and LOTS of fresh vegetables.

What a paradise of a place!! Good thing it is a little drive from here or I'd be there every Saturday.

May make a trip out to the local farms, which are only 10 minutes from here. It's berry season.
I used up all the strawberries for the pie and need to pickup a few more pints. Would have gotten them at the farmer's market but ran out of bags to carry them in. Yes, I left with a dollar in my pocket...but it was worth it.
