Ted Allen
Close Ted Allen has become a familiar face on cable television, starting as the food and wine expert on Bravo's "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy," moving on to judging spots on Bravo's "Top Chef" and Food Network's "Iron Chef."
Now he's working on the second season of his own Food Network show, "Food Detectives," and is ready to launch his second show, "Chopped." It's a competition between
sous chefs that Allen, who describes himself as a "really enthusiastic home cook," is quick to explain is not a retread of "Top Chef," after some early blogging about the show suggested otherwise.
Q.So, how is "Chopped" different from "Top Chef"? A. "Chopped" is a show that takes
sous chefs, generally sort of midcareer chefs, sometimes younger. In every episode, we have four chefs competing, and every episode we have one winner. That winner takes home $10,000, and you never see them again.
"Top Chef" is a reality show. Everybody lives together in a "Big Brother" house. They go through all sorts of brainwashing: sleep deprivation, they take away your phone. You don't get to read newspapers and watch TV.
It's a little petri dish where you get to see how insane that can drive people. In addition to that, they also have cooking competitions. In our show, we
only have cooking competitions.
